Hip Health for Active Professionals in London

For most people working in London, staying active is arguably the main way to maintain their daily lives. It’s no longer something you just do as a hobby, either. After all, a morning run from work, cycling to the office before work, lunchtime, gym sessions, playing sports on the weekend, or just aiming to get 10,000 steps each day all contribute to better health and performance at work.

Now, staying active is great and all, but the harder you try to stay healthy, the easier it becomes to ignore what your body is telling you. Your hip joints are particularly easy to ignore in this regard, despite the fact that they sit at the centre of almost every movement we make throughout the day and throughout our lives, absorbing the force when we walk, stabilising us when we stand and generating power during exercise. That being said, if you are trying to stay active but haven’t really paid attention to your hips, read on as we explore this topic and share some great tips to help you best preserve your mobility, independence, and quality of life for years to come.

Why do busy professionals often miss their hip problems?

Hip pain usually begins with very small signs. When it first starts out, all you’ll likely experience is something like mild stiffness after sitting through long meetings, a slight ache after an evening workout, or just reduced flexibility as you grow older, because these symptoms come and go and are usually very mild. Many people dismiss them as normal consequences of ageing or of exercising more frequently. The problem with this is that delaying attention to your hip can allow for some underlying condition to progress from bad to worse.

You see, hip pain can develop from a lot of conditions: muscle strains, tendon irritation, bursitis, cartilage damage, labral tears, osteoarthritis, you name it. In some cases, the problem does not even originate in the hip but in the lower back or pelvis, making diagnosis more complicated. Busy people are generally prone to postponing such a diagnosis because of their demanding schedules, leaving very little time for appointments – the mindset of simply working through discomfort is not healthy. It may be useful for a few deadlines here and there, but sooner or later, you will have to pay attention to it when the problem becomes borderline unavoidable, and your quality of life is affected.

What everyday habits can keep your hip joint healthy?

While the things described above may sound quite bleak, the good news is that maintaining your hip health does not require sacrificing any part of your life, at least not just yet. In fact, the only thing that matters for now is consistency. Regular movement throughout the day will help prevent prolonged periods of stiffness. If you spend several hours sitting, make a conscious effort to stand, stretch, or walk every hour. Even a few minutes of standing up and moving around will help relieve joint stiffness and encourage healthy blood circulation throughout the body.

Although many people associate healthy hips solely with flexibility, you should also strengthen the surrounding muscles to provide them with some stability. Exercises that build stronger glutes, core muscles, and thighs can reduce much of the unnecessary stress placed on your hip during practically any movement. In fact, a lot of orthopedists say that resistance training is one of the best ways that you can maintain your joint function for a long time and reduce the risk of future problems.

This can be extended to your body weight, as every additional kilogram that you’re currently carrying will increase the force transmitted to your hip joint almost tenfold during everyday movement. Not only that, but staying within a healthy weight range has two important benefits: reducing mechanical stress on your joints and lowering inflammation, which is very commonly associated with hip joint degeneration. Do not ignore your recovery time either. Getting quality sleep each night and giving yourself ample recovery time between demanding workouts will also help reduce the likelihood of overuse-related injury.

When should you seek help for your hip pain?

Take another look at the conditions discussed a few paragraphs above. You will notice that some of them can cause situations where your only recourse would be to seek proper assessment and even urgent medical attention. Again, not every sort of ache will require this, but there are some instances that absolutely will. If you are currently experiencing pain that has persisted for several weeks already, discomfort that is interfering with your sleep, excessive stiffness, or just a reduced ability to walk comfortably, take them as signs that something significant is happening to your hip joint, and you need to seek a doctor almost immediately, as soon as possible. This is truer still for situations involving clicking sensations, instability, or pain following the fall. In such cases, it is best to rush to your nearest A&E immediately.

Now, if you are experiencing any of these problems, don’t think of it as a sign that your life as it once was is over. If you go to an experienced doctor such as Mr Jerome Davidson, a hip specialist in London, you will absolutely be able to create a plan that helps you regain control over your life. Modern orthopaedic care has come a long way in recent years and offers solutions for virtually all conditions. Now, whether that involves physiotherapy, lifestyle modifications, injections, or surgery will differ from person to person, but the point is that your hip pain will hopefully not impact your life for very long once you follow your doctor’s guidance and seek appropriate treatment.

Stay active, but don’t put your hips at risk

Despite everything discussed so far, remember that protecting your hips is not just about exercising well and consistently. At the end of the day, the goal is simply to ensure you stay mobile for your entire life. Your goal can be anything: running through your 50s, staying comfortable on long workdays, or simply staying independent later in life. Your main duty is to listen to your body for symptoms and adopt healthy habits to avoid losing control. If you can do that and seek professional help when needed, your hip health will surely be fine for years to come.
