Common Questions Parents Ask About Paediatric Ultrasound Scans

As a parent, when your paediatrician recommends a paediatric ultrasound, it can easily catch you off guard. One moment you’re at the GP trying to work out why your child has a sore tummy or a persistent lump, and the next you’re organising an imaging appointment. It’s only natural to wonder what the scan involves and whether your child will be comfortable.

But an ultrasound scan is not something you need to worry about. A paediatric ultrasound is a straightforward way for doctors to gather more information without exposing children to radiation. Knowing what this scan is, how it works, and what to expect at the appointment can help you prepare better, especially if it’s your child’s first time getting an ultrasound.

What Is A Paediatric Ultrasound?

A paediatric ultrasound uses sound waves to create real-time images of the inside of your child’s body. It’s safe and non-invasive because it doesn’t use radiation, making it suitable for babies, children and teenagers. Depending on your child’s symptoms, your doctor may recommend using Paediatric Ultrasound services to examine the abdomen, hips, neck, soft tissues, kidneys, bladder, or other parts of the body. One of the most common examinations is a paediatric abdominal ultrasound, which helps find the possible causes of symptoms such as ongoing tummy pain or unexplained swelling.

Why Might My Child Need An Ultrasound?

When your doctor needs more information about what’s causing your child’s symptoms, and a physical examination isn’t enough, they may recommend a paediatric ultrasound. Here are some common reasons why your child might need an ultrasound:

  • Persistent abdominal pain
  • Suspected appendicitis
  • A lump or swelling
  • Kidney or bladder concerns
  • Hip checks in young babies
  • Soft tissue or sports-related injuries

However, an ultrasound is often just one of the aspects that your doctor checks. It can give a clearer picture of what’s happening inside the body, which helps them decide on the most appropriate next steps for your child’s care.

Will The Scan Hurt Or Be Uncomfortable?

While this might be your biggest worry as a parent, a paediatric scan usually doesn’t cause any severe pain or discomfort. A sonographer will apply a small amount of warm gel to the area being examined before moving a handheld probe across the skin. Your child may feel gentle pressure from the probe, particularly if the area is already sore, but the examination shouldn’t be painful. You can stay with your child throughout the scan to make him/her feel more relaxed and secure.

Does My Child Need To Prepare?

So, how to prepare your child for the scan? Well, that depends on the type of ultrasound being performed. For example, some abdominal scans require your child to avoid eating for a few hours beforehand, while others may require a full bladder. So, when you get the referral, you can ask your imaging clinic about it. Usually, the imaging clinic would let you know in advance if there’s anything you need to do before the appointment. However, you can ensure your child is dressed in comfortable clothing. You should also explain to them what the scan is and what will happen in simple, reassuring language to help them feel more at ease. For younger children, bringing along a favourite toy, book or comfort item can make the experience feel much less intimidating.

Choosing Experienced Children’s Ultrasound Services

Children aren’t simply small adults, and their healthcare experience shouldn’t feel the same either. Choosing a provider that offers specialised children’s ultrasound services means your child is more likely to be cared for by professionals who understand how to communicate with young patients and adapt the examination to suit their age. If your doctor has recommended imaging, selecting a clinic that provides experienced ultrasound services can make the appointment smoother for both you and your child.

A paediatric ultrasound doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. With the right care and a little preparation, most children complete the scan comfortably. If you need to book a child ultrasound scan service, visit Insight Diagnostic Imaging in Springvale or Dandenong or speak with your local GP to find a reliable provider. Many clinics also offer bulkbill ultrasound services for eligible patients with a valid referral, helping families access the care they need without unnecessary financial pressure.
