What to Check Before Mounting a Large TV on the Wall

Wall mounting a large television requires more than selecting a suitable bracket. The TV’s dimensions, weight, VESA mounting pattern, wall construction, ventilation requirements and cable connections should all be checked before installation.

These considerations apply whether you are installing a QLED TV or an OLED TV. Checking the television and mounting hardware specifications in advance can help ensure that the planned installation is compatible with the equipment and wall.

TV Size and Dimensions

The first step is to check the television’s physical dimensions rather than relying only on its advertised screen size. Measure the available wall area and compare it with the TV’s stated width, height and depth.

Also consider the space around the television. Shelves, cabinets, adjacent walls and other objects should not interfere with the screen or the operation of the wall mount.

  • Check the TV’s dimensions without the stand.
  • Measure the available wall space.
  • Consider the depth of the TV and wall bracket together.
  • Account for nearby furniture and other potential obstructions.

Once the available space has been confirmed, the TV’s weight should be checked against the mounting hardware.

TV Weight

A large television can place substantial load on its mounting system, making weight an important specification to verify. Check the manufacturer’s stated TV weight, particularly the weight without the supplied stand if a separate figure is provided.

The wall bracket should have a maximum load rating that accommodates the TV’s weight. Screen size alone is not sufficient for determining whether a particular bracket is suitable.

  • Check the TV’s weight without its stand.
  • Check the wall mount’s maximum supported weight.
  • Follow the mounting instructions supplied by both manufacturers.

After confirming the weight, check whether the mounting holes on the television correspond with the selected bracket.

VESA Mounting Pattern

The VESA mounting pattern refers to the spacing of the mounting holes on the back of a compatible display. VESA specifications provide standardised mounting-hole dimensions, allowing compatible displays and mounting products to be matched.

Check the TV manufacturer’s specifications for its VESA pattern and compare this with the mounting bracket’s supported range.

  • Confirm the horizontal and vertical mounting-hole measurements.
  • Check the bracket’s supported VESA configurations.
  • Verify compatibility with the specific TV model.

With the TV and bracket compatibility established, the next consideration is whether the wall can safely accommodate the mounting system.

Wall Construction and Structural Support

The type of wall determines which installation method and fixings are appropriate. Common wall constructions include concrete, brick, masonry and stud-based walls, but their load-bearing characteristics and suitable fixings differ.

For stud walls, identify the appropriate structural fixing points before positioning the bracket. For masonry or concrete surfaces, use fixings specified as suitable for the particular wall material.

  • Identify the wall construction.
  • Locate suitable structural fixing points where applicable.
  • Use hardware appropriate for the wall material.
  • Follow the wall bracket manufacturer’s installation instructions.

Once the wall has been assessed, select a bracket that suits both the television and the intended viewing position.

Wall Mount Type

Wall mounts generally include fixed, tilting and full-motion designs. The appropriate type depends on how the TV needs to be positioned and adjusted after installation.

A fixed mount keeps the television in one position, while tilting and full-motion mounts provide additional adjustment. The chosen bracket should also meet the TV’s weight and VESA requirements.

The mount type therefore affects both positioning and accessibility, so it should be considered before installation rather than afterwards.

Ventilation and Clearance

Televisions require the clearances specified by their manufacturers to allow appropriate airflow around ventilation openings. Check the installation instructions for the exact model before deciding how closely the TV should sit against the wall.

  • Identify the television’s ventilation openings.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s specified clearance requirements.
  • Ensure the bracket does not obstruct required airflow.
  • Consider rear connections when assessing available space.

After ventilation requirements have been confirmed, the mounting position should be assessed from the main viewing area.

Viewing Height and Position

The TV should be positioned according to the room’s seating arrangement and normal viewing position. Consider the height of the main seating area and the location from which the screen will usually be watched.

Viewing distance should also be considered alongside screen size. A large OLED TV, for example, should be positioned where its size and viewing distance are appropriate for the available room.

The final position should also leave sufficient space for the bracket to operate if it is a tilting or full-motion model.

Room Lighting and Reflections

Before drilling into the wall, check how windows, lamps and overhead lights relate to the proposed TV position. Light sources can create reflections that affect screen visibility.

Consider both daytime and evening conditions, as the room’s lighting can change throughout the day. The TV’s screen characteristics should also be reviewed alongside the manufacturer’s product information.

A suitable position should therefore account for both viewing geometry and the room’s lighting conditions.

Cable and Port Access

Cable planning should be completed before mounting the television. Identify the locations of HDMI, USB, Ethernet, aerial and power connections, then determine how each required cable will reach the TV.

  • Check the location of all required ports.
  • Measure cable lengths before installation.
  • Avoid placing cables under excessive tension or sharp bends.
  • Confirm that ports remain accessible after mounting.
  • Plan concealed or surface cable routing in advance.

Checking these features before installation helps ensure that the QLED TV or OLED TV is compatible with the wall, mounting hardware, viewing position and planned connections.
