Good Bots vs. Bad Bots: Why You Need to Detect AI Agents (Not Just Block Them)?

Do you own an online store? If so, you might have been advised to block all bots. This sounds like a safe and simple move. However, we live in an era, where artificial intelligence continues to achieve new heights everyday. In this era, a complete ban can cost you more compared to what it saves for your business. The reason is that not all automated traffic can harm your business.

In reality, some of the most valuable traffic reaching your site comes from good bots. For instance, search engine crawlers like Google Bot help your products appear in search engine result pages. Similarly, price comparison engines drive qualified leads to your app or website. Again, inventory aggregators can help customers find your stock across the web. If you take the card of blocking them all, you are not simply stopping robbers; rather, you are shutting the entry path to your own sales and marketing channels.

The challenge is not simply identifying bots. Rather, it is differentiating between the helpful automation and malicious AI agents.

Why Block All is Problematic?

Traditional bot mitigation generally depends on a “block everything that is not explicitly human” approach. Indeed, this move helps to stop obvious scrapers. However, it can create a false sense of security. Modern AI agents are experts in hiding. They can solve CAPTCHA like humans. Similarly, they can mimic mouse movements and can rotate via residential proxy networks. To a traditional security tool, an advanced scalping bot cannot be differentiated from a legitimate customer browsing. It means that when you completely depend on blocking, you will create two choices. The first is to block both bad and good guys, or let them both pass through. This is nothing but a whack-a-mole game. When you opt for this technique of blocking all, your website or app will become vulnerable to inventory hoarding, content theft, and price scraping, while it can also frustrate legitimate customers and partners with unwanted challenges.

Why is Detecting AI Agents Powerful?

Rather than blocking all AI agents, both good and bad, you can shift to detect AI agents. Rather than treating all bots as enemies, modern AI agents evaluate behavior to gain insights into intent.

When you take the case of good bots, they often function predictably. In other words, they will crawl at an understandable pace. Also, they will access only publicly available pages and also they respect your privacy. On the other hand, bad bots function and behave differently. For instance, they can access high-value pages on your app or website without creating a browsing history. They can exhibit microsecond precision in clicking that humans cannot replicate. They can try to scrape pricing data across thousands of SKUs within seconds.

When you identify these subtle behavioral anomalies, you can let good bots crawl freely, while also silently trying to drain your inventory.

Why Is It Important to Detect AI Agents?

For e-commerce businesses like yours, the difference between blocking and detection is the difference between stagnation and growth. So, you will be particular about growth, won’t you?
